Sebum (Oil) Protection is controlled by Androgen hormones. Oils help to lubricate skin protecting it from the environment. Excess Androgen Hormones trigger an over protection of oil creating a shiny appearance. The follicle becomes clogged with a mixture of oil and dead skin cells, prohibiting oxygen from entering. This leads to swelling, redness, inflammation around the follicle resulting in Acne.
